MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, USA, March 6, 2018 — Robert Hilty, PhD, VP of Research and Development at Xtalic will present the characterization of various nanocrystalline alloy coatings of Ni, Ag and Al. Included in the presentation will be the fundamental mechanisms of creating stable nanocrystalline structures. These improvements in properties make the nanocrystalline materials made by electrodeposition an ideal candidate for use as coatings or electro-additive manufacturing materials for aerospace, electronics, and automotive industries.
High performance, thermodynamically stable, nanocrystalline metallic alloy coatings have been successfully developed by employing a novel electrodeposition process. Using a reverse pulse process, a reduced grain size and a super saturated solid solution were simultaneously achieved. These nanomaterials are free of secondary phases resulting in reduced pitting corrosion and micro-galvanic corrosion. By engineering the grain size into the nano regime, we will show how the mechanical properties, along with corrosion and wear resistance, improve as grain size is reduced. We will also report on the fatigue behavior of nanocrystalline Al-alloys, which show a significant promise for boosting performance.
